Routine Care

Keeping Your Partner Healthy

A yearly examination with routine care is recommended to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Vaccinations

Horses need to be vaccinated annually against diseases such as rabies, tetanus, and West Nile virus. These vaccinations help to keep horses healthy and protect them from potentially deadly, but very preventable, diseases. If you have questions regarding which vaccines are best suited for your horse's lifestyle, please call the office and we are happy to help design an individual vaccine plan that is perfect for your needs.

Coggins/Routine Blood Work

A Coggins test is an annual test required by most states (including Ohio!) for all horses that are six months of age or older. The test is used to detect the presence of the equine infectious anemia virus (EIA), which is a deadly disease that can infect horses, donkeys, and mules.

The EIA virus is spread through blood feeding flies and contaminated blood products. EIA can be fatal to horses. There is no cure for the disease, and it can only be controlled through strict quarantine measures. If your horse tests positive for the virus, it will need to be isolated from other horses to prevent the spread of the disease or euthanized.

Coggins tests are required annually for horses that are showing, racing or traveling across state lines. New coggins tests are required before sending a horse to sale and are usually required by facilities hosting lessons, clinics or trail rides.

Equine Dentistry

When you take your horse to Carrollton Equine, we will perform a thorough examination of your horse's mouth. This examination will include a visual inspection of the teeth and gums, as well as a palpation of the jaw muscles. We may also use special instruments to get a closer look at your horse's teeth. After the examination, we will discuss our findings with you and recommend any necessary treatment.

Wellness Exams

Just like humans, horses need to visit the doctor for regular check-ups.

During these appointments, we’ll check your horse's vital signs and give them a physical exam. We will also assess the horse's weight and body condition, and check their teeth and hooves.
